Dub or Sub |

I was curiouse so...for those of you who are non-japanese speakers, which do you prefer? Dubbed or subbed anime? Personally, I always go for the dubbed on
anime because I hate reading the text and missing out on the action. Ill admit some anime have really horrible voice acting though such as bleach.

To answer your question, I prefer subbed a little more than dubbed, though I'm not that picky.
I think Bleach has great voice acting though. If you want bad voice acting try the Sonic the Hedgehog anime. I think they may have redone it for the dvd release though. The voice acting is horrible. Sonic sounds like a drunk woman, and tails sounds like a three year old with a cold. And remember dubs are never perfect. When any animation is done, the voices are done first, because its so much easier to synch it that way. Dubbing is hard because it has to match up with already made animation, which is further made more difficult by the language not being english. Those voice actors have to both act, and time it so that it synchs up with the animation, not with just the duration, but the actual lips of the character. I kinda got off on a rant there, sorry (not really)

Good point, O and...some of the characters in bleach may not suffer from poor voice acting, but there are alot of them who show no emotion when they talk.

If there is any chances I'll take subbed version thank you!
Well, it might be the fact that here in Finland everything foreign coming out of TV is subbed. (Except kids shows of course, they are dubbed) But all shows and movies, Simpsons, Friends, Scrubs, everything is subbed so I'm really used to hear the actual original voices of the actors. It was a huge schock to me when I saw Simpsons while I was in Germany. Oh my gosh.. It was horrible.. And when I was on holiday in Spain (like 6 years ago) I saw this old movie called Anaconda. I knew Jennifer Lopez could speak spanish so good, but Owen Wilson and other cast too? You really can't lipsync spanish to lips that are speaking english.. But yes, I do prefer subbed stuff, cause it just looks better and sounds better. And I don't have any problem looking at the action and reading subs.. Little bit info about Finland too heh ^^ |

I agree Kadotettu. It's like when my mom would complain about widescreen movies because she thought the black bars were distracting? How are they
distracting? It's not like they move, or make nose or anything. psh

Subs for about 99% of the time are better. The lip synching for dubs is always off. The only cases in which I think the English dub is better is in the
Hellsing OVA (although Alucard sounds too fake), and in FLCL, where all the characters are pretty much good.
P; Bleach's dub isn't that bad as far as dubs go. Naruto's is pretty bad though. So is most anime from the 90's and before.

@Kadotettu - Yes, there is no substitute for the amazing voice of Frank Castallenta as Homer Simpson. No doubt.
I usually watch all things with subtitles anyway. But when the movie or show is originally in another language anyway, unless it's a great dub, it's subtitles. FanDubs are even better. Anyone seen Prince of Tennis?

i actually prefer dub...i only wacth with subs when i have to because there to distracting, sometimes i have to pause the video just because theres a sentance
thats so long and it only gives you a few seconds to read it and that REALLY takes off from the video

Oh yes, Franklyn reminded me of something. It's not basically problem with subtitles but when there is a explanation for something abnormal happening at
the top of the screen and subtitles at the bottom of the screen. Hard time reading them both in 3 seconds
It would be same if there would be explanation at the top and you would need to read it and listen to characters at the same time (if its dubbed I mean).. Hard to read and listen different things at the same time WoahStripes: I have seen Prince of Tennis, subbed, it's great ^^ But you probably wanted to know if someone had seen it fandubbed.. sorry, not. |

Kadotettu and Franklyn: Pausing it causes you that much discomfort? You need to cut down on the sugar and grow your attention spans, kids.
PS: I love fandub parodies. There are so many on youtube... the Abridged series rocks.

Eskimo777: I didn't say it's so much discomfort to rewind 10 seconds and pause the video. I'm just wondering, why do we have to do so? Would it be
so much trouble to make the explanation last for 10 seconds instead of 3? Of course subtitles would flow normally at this time.
It is trouble to get up from the sofa, walk to your computer to stop the video, rewind it wait for the exact moment and pause it, then unpause it and get back to your sofa, just to read what is happening on the screen |

Since I've set my sights on learning Japanese, I'll go for subs (or even Raw as it is).
The reason is I prefer Japanese voice-acting to the general English voice-acting (and most Japanese actors put more into the role than if it's just being over-dubbed). But everyone is allowed to their own point of view, and preferences ^^ ~light |

Subs if I'm pissy about the way the anime applies english tonation to japanese words. Dubs when I'm too tired to care subs. Either or when I'm too
tired to care about either or. Or nothing when I'm too tired to care about anything. This does not however apply to the Simpsons. Play me that sh in
angolian I'll still watch it even if im tired/ about to die/already dead.
Here's a classic example of how subs mess up japanese words. Say "naruto". If you're American or English it should sound something like NaaarooooTOE like a hybrid of human toe. You see we tend to over pronounce the vowels. What we should be saying is..... 'a' like 'u' in nut 'r' between an l and an r so touch the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth near your 2 front teeth and say lll. try it again but this time relax your tongue and flix it a bit while trying to say rrrr. your tongue should vibrate against the roof of your mouth. if this is too hard youtube "tongue roll" or "rolling your tongue" 'u' half pronounced u. should be quick. almost unnoticible. 'o' like 'augh' in faught not 'oe' in toe Now you know how to pronounce Naruto. But just because you know how to pronounce it doesnt mean you will. Say "My name is Robin. Your name is toe. His name is Naruto (with japan-tonation)". You just switched from english to japanese tonation and it sounded weird right? ... probably why dubs mispronounce japanese... because it can sound weird changing from english to japanese tonation all the time.

Learn Japanese and then you don't have to worry about Subs or Dubs ^^
If you have the guts to learn the language, go here - this is literally just a starting point. |

lol ya Japanese is tuff stuff. You have to be really thorough about it. Like a day-to-day 30 minute study basis or every other day. I'm trying to learn too. Good luck to all you Japanese language students out there |
