I think the thing with the cake, is that it is drawn with a different perspective than the girl. Straight-on perspectives generally makes things look flat.

Well, Usually, I use pen tool to color base, and use Blur tool and smudge tool to make the color line smoother, And this depends on my experince, I dont know
how to say, Hope It will help, U should up ur work, I'll tell u how to shade color shadow in ur work !! Ruuuuuuuu...............

You mean I should give you a sample and you would tell me how to deliver the shadows? Ok I'll try to post something simple and I'll leave the shading
part to your capable hands... I'll pm you when I get something up, i would really like to learn how to make shadow fade when approaching the lighted area,
or you could say the transition from light to shadow, your seem to fade into the light or darkness depending on where you start looking at it... Thanks again

Here is it ! Hope u'll understand TT_TT
1. U color it with pentool 2. U blur the line in arrow's part (Blur's opacity should 20%) 3. (a little difficult), U use Smudge tool to shade it follow the arrow ! (Smudge's Opacity should 20%) I use it go up and down until it's look okay to u !! PS: I do it in a short time,so, in 3rd step is not look like in ur example, but If u work hard, It's gonna be !! Ruuuuuuuu...................

Oh about the opacity thingy are you referring the the strength option located above or the opacity of the layer when I use the Blur and Smudge option I could
not see an opacity slider only a strength meter... Here is what I came up with, you are right it's not as easy as it looks and I can't seem to get the
fading effect with the SMudge tool it turns our darker when I stroke going one direction... Do you have any suggestion on how to do the brush strokes?

Small pic, it's ur, The red zone i think i should be remove, So, I edited it in my version (large pic), beside, u should add the color in 2 red line in center of my pic, Hope this will help ! Ruuuuuu............
