I'm AJAX
Firstly a little about myself: I just started drawing two days ago, no joke. I need to know if I have something going here or not. I just bought the MU Home
Study Coarse and some other materials to help me get started here. I have a background in mini sculpting and painting and a large focus in writing so I
figured that Manga would be right up my ally so that I could better put my thoughts on paper for people to both look at and read!
Okay enough about myself, I have an intro to myself in the Intro section, (I just love meeting new passionate people all the time).
Here is a sample of art that I put together yesterday while watching a little tv in my PJs. She is originally in color but I gray styled it in the computer to
fashion a traditional manga, hows she look? I know there is no body, (as of now) I am still working towards a final full body shot, these things take time.
Suggestions or concerns, you can be as honest as you need to, I just need to know if there is a future in this for me or not, I have some close friends that
can really draw and they just shrug at my attempts...I have all the passion in the world to be one of the best, I guess moral support would be nice 
, or of course the brutally honest at home self acclaimed critic, my personal
favorite too

You started drawing two days ago? -_-
Anyway, the biggest issue I can see is with the shape, I think the face looks too long, ie the chin should curve sooner into the ear You could try looking at some tutorials for reference like this thing I found from google: http://lordshadowblade.de...head-in-profile-70425670 (obviously its not manga style but it's just for a general idea) |

Thanks man, lucky I have some really good step by step books all about manga (Thanks to MU and Barnes & Noble), you're right about the face, it looks a
little elongated almost primal I guess, oops. I like your step by step drawing, I have a major issue with eyes which is why I always like the side view where
I only have to draw one.

my advice though, is draw your guides - even under a simple bust image! and practice practice practice

Drawing guides, are those the lines that "cut" every shape that you draw so that they look even?

Basically yes, but guides do not make every part even at all times because guides are either affected by angle, perspective, effect and weight same as the
actual drawing.
Well since you have te books u already have a reference but try exploring a little out of the manga boundary you'll find it useful.

sanda is right - guides are just the basics to get your proportions in line - where the head is, the shoulders, waist, how the arms are going to be positioned,
etc... everyone uses different kinds of guides, some use 3d block shapes, some use 2d shaps, others use stick figures, and a bunch of us use a mash of all
three. it's just whatever helps you visualize the image better

Thanks again guys, it will probably help me in the long run to use the guides, seeing as how I can only draw in two perspectives. All very helpful, I am still
waiting for my MU USB shipment to arrive.
